Multiple people reported injured in mass shooting at supermarket

A mass shooting incident has been reported in Buffalo, New York, with “bodies everywhere” according to local reports.

The incident took place in a Tops store on Jefferson Avenue. Fire engines as well as police cars are on the scene.

Buffalo Police reported that officers were on the scene of a mass shooting at the Tops grocery store in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue. “Multiple people” have been struck by gunfire, the report says, and the shooter is in custody.

Police are currently trying to evacuate customers who had been hiding in the shop.

Unconfirmed reports say that nine people have lost their lives. Members of the public are being advised to avoid the area.

Local news feed Erie Blotter tweeted: “Buffalo – MASS Shooting. Tops on Jefferson Ave. Shooter Taken Out. Police looking to clear store – ‘There are Bodies Everywhere’.”

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz tweeted at 2:49 p.m, local time, that he was aware of an “active multiple shooting event” occurring at the Tops Markets at 1275 Jefferson Ave., and he urged the public to avoid the area.

A large police presence has cordoned off roads in a two-block radius of the supermarket.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “I am closely monitoring the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo. We have offered assistance to local officials. If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow guidance from law enforcement and local officials.”
