Managing your own money is challenging – especially when you’re not used to it.
One university student has revealed how he has been eating dog food for breakfast, dinner and tea because he has already run out of money.
Speaking to Reddit, the man explained how he ate his way through a bowl of dog food as a dare before discovering he had a taste for it.
He said: “Since I’m broke, I have resorted to eating dog food. I only eat the dry dog food, I have never tried the wet ones.”
However, his unusual diet didn’t go unnoticed by his roommates who questioned why he has so many bags of dog food in his bedroom when he doesn’t have a pet.
“When one of my other friends visited my room and saw heaps of dog food, he asked me why,” he added. “I told him it’s for me and he just said ‘what the f***”.
After eating his way through a good number of bags, the man has started to question whether regularly eating dog food is going to jeopardise his health.
While most users questioned how cost affective swapping human food for dog food actually is, others suggested he visits food banks to try to help him through this difficult period.
One user said: “Inexpensive dog food is loaded with filler ingredients that are barely digestible. Basically you will poop more and not get the nutrients you’re expecting.
“It also is not subject to the same regulations as human food. It will often contain ground up animal parts like chicken beaks, bones and feather.
“Expensive dog food, made with quality ingredients, would not have these issues. But then that kind of defeats the purpose of saving money.
“There are ways to eat human food very frugally. Rice and beans can go a long, long way and are going to taste a lot better than dog food and give you a more balanced diet. It’s probably even cheaper than eating puppy chow, not sure. Learn to cook!”
Another user added: “Pet food is not subject to the same health and safety standards or quality control as human food so I wouldn’t recommend you continue doing this.
“It probably doesn’t provide much nutritional value but even if this doesn’t bother you the fact that it could contain all kinds of rubbish that isn’t deemed as fit for human consumption should.
“You could get sick from contaminants because the food isn’t handled with as much care as human food or additives that aren’t approved for humans to eat could affect your health.”
