An international footballer has been fatally shot in his native country of Panama. Unknown assailants opened fire on a gathering of individuals, among whom was 26-year-old Gilberto Hernandez, a defender representing the Panamanian champions, Club Atletico Independiente. Tragically, Hernandez lost his life, while seven others sustained injuries during this incident, which occurred in the tumultuous seaport city of Colon.
Regrettably, Hernandez is the second Panamanian football player to meet a violent end in Colon in the past six years. This area has witnessed a surge in homicides as two rival gangs vie for dominance in controlling drug-smuggling routes.
The motive behind Hernandez’s specific targeting remains undisclosed, leaving questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
