Eleven individuals have lost their lives following the collapse of the roof of a school gymnasium in north-east China.
The incident occurred while a girls’ volleyball team was utilizing the facility, as reported by state media.
Local witnesses conveyed that many of the victims are children, although official confirmation is yet to be released. Distraught parents have gathered at a nearby hospital, anxiously seeking updates on the situation. Tragically, only eight out of the 19 people present inside the gym at the time of the collapse managed to survive.
Local media reports indicate that the authorities have taken into custody the executives of a construction company in the area.
They stand accused of negligence, as they allegedly dumped perlite, a type of volcanic glass, on the roof of the gym while carrying out work on an adjacent building project.
