A 16-month-old boy is fighting for his life after he was allegedly sexually abused by a 33-year-old man.
The toddler is in a critical condition having suffered severe injuries including swelling and bleeding to his brain.
Jemison Police said they had arrested 33-year-old Shawn Wesley Averett in connection with the boy’s injuries.
The boy’s mum wrote on a GoFundMe page: “They have him in a medically induced coma for the moment but they said that when the pressure and swelling subside they will take everything off and let him wake up on his own.
“He has tubes and wires running from his little head to his toes.
“Pray for my baby to have a speedy and fast recovery.”
Averett has been charged with aggravated child abuse and sexual torture.
The 33-year-old, who lives in Shelby in Alabama, was released from Chilton County Jail on July 19 having posted a $90,000 bond.
He is due to appear in court on August 15.
His attorney, John Robbins, told AL.com: “The police and the public at large are jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts.
“Shawn denies that he ever hurt (the child) and that he did not cause his injuries.”
