Starving kids found locked in a dog kennel covered in poo as couple arrested

Two of the oldest kids found in 3ft animal cage with fridge full of food found in house – but locked away from them

Four young malnourished and filthy children have been found in a Texas small holding covered in faeces – with two kept in a tiny dog kennel, police say.

Officers were called to the property in Wise County after reports of a early-morning family disturbance.

But once there Sheriff Lane Akin was greeted with a grim discovery as he found four children ranging from five years old to just 12 months.

Shockingly, two of the oldest children were being kept in a dog kennel that was just three square feet in size, the Wise County Messenger report.

“The others appeared malnourished, covered in urine and faeces,” Sheriff Akin said.

“There was food in the house, but it was locked up where the kids couldn’t get it.”

Wise County Jail officials identified the pair as mum Paige Harkins and her partner Andrew Fabila, both 24.

Fabila is the father of one of the children and was found with cuts all over his face after the disturbance.

Fabila had to be taken to hospital such were the extent of the injuries.

Detectives found feces all through the property with Wise County Chief Deputy saying: “This is at the top of the list of worst cases.”

He said there was a fridge full of food – but fitted with straps so the children couldn’t open it.

Neighbours said they had no idea the children were being kept in the outbuildings.

One neighbour told journalist Chris Sadeghi: “They told me the barn sits on a property that was unkept and looked abandoned up until a couple months ago when the tall grass surrounding the barn was mowed.

“But she said they never saw anyone coming or going from the barn.”
