Songs you didn’t know Ed Sheeran wrote – and one he wishes he kept for himself

Ed Sheeran is one of the most successful pop artists of all time, but he’s also to thank for a lot of our other favourite songs

Ed Sheeran really is winning at life.

As well as his huge collection of hit tracks and massive pile of awards, he’s now gone and married the love of his life.

Even though he’s not had an album out since 2017, his songs are still on the radio or being played in shops constantly so it’s hard to go a day without hearing his voice.

But you might actually be listening to even more Ed than you realised, as his incredible songwriting skills have been snapped up by other hit artists.

He’s written a huge number of songs for other stars including One Direction and Robbie Williams.

Some he’s written completely by himself, and he’s closely with the artist on others.
Anne-Marie – 2002
Ed teamed up with pop singer Anne-Marie to write her hit track 2002.

The catchy tune, which is packed full of nostalgic references, spent 40 weeks in the chart peaking at Number 3.

One Direction – Little Things

Ed worked with the 1D boys on a number of tracks but this is probably the most famous. It reached number one in the official chart

Justin Bieber – Love Yourself

According to Billboard the song was originally written for superstar Rihanna, but he never got around to playing it for her.

Instead it went to Biebs, who co-wrote the rest of it, and it reached number one and remained in the charts for an incredible 64 weeks.

Liam Payne – Strip That Down

Ed co-wrote the former One Direction star’s debut solo album.

He also sings on the record but his voice was taken down several keys in a bid to keep his identity a secret (which didn’t last long…).

The song reached number three in the chart.

Robbie Williams – Pretty Woman

Robbie admits he pretty much begged Ed to write a song for him.

Back in 2016 he told the Sun : “[I thought,] days are running out for the album, ‘Have I got enough hits? Are there enough hits? I’ve got Ed Sheeran’s email. I’ll send him an email and see what happens. One last hope’.

“[I wrote,] ‘Dear Ed, Robbie Williams here. Do you have any spare hits?’ And he sent me this song about ‘Pretty Woman’. I added a chorus and I think the song is fully formed.”

Matt Terry – When Christmas Comes Around

This was the X Factor winner’s single back in 2016.

Ed’s track made him the second winner of the talent show to release an original song as their first single. It reached number three in the charts.

Olly Murs – Love Shine Down

Olly teamed up with Ed for this 2010 track.

They were joined by Jason Pebworth, George Astasio, Jon Shave, and Dan Smith to write the track.

The Weeknd – Dark Times
Ed wrote and featured on the Weeknd track.

Jessie Ware – Say You Love Me

This track was written by Jessie, Ed, Benny Blanco and Ben Ash. It reached number 22 in the charts back in 2016.

But it turns out there’s one song he wishes he kept for himself.

Speaking to New York radio station Fresh 102.7 , Ed said: “The one on Tori Kelly’s album, I Was Made For Loving You.”

“I remember writing that with Tori and saying before, “Whatever we write, definitely for your album, don’t worry about it,” and remember halfway through being like “Aghhh, God I wish I was keeping this.”

“It is a really beautiful song and it’s turned out so, so well. But that’s one song that I wish I’d kept.”
