Police arrest man, 27, after female A&E worker, 50, was stabbed multiple times in the emergency department of a London hospital

A 27-year-old man who stabbed a 50-year-old female A&E worker with a pair of scissors has been arrested.

The victim was knifed at Newham University Hospital in Plaistow, east London, this morning just after midnight.

Shane Degaris, deputy group chief executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, said the victim was urgently treated in the hospital and has since been discharged.

He said: ‘This was a shocking and senseless attack on a member of staff doing their duty.

‘The Trust condemns any form of violence and aggression against our dedicated and hard-working staff.’

In the light of this incident we are reviewing security at all our hospitals to ensure the safety of all our staff and patients at all times
