Mum charged with murdering 12-year-old son she’d tried to drown as a baby

A MUM is facing murder charges for allegedly killing her 12-year-old son a decade after she was jailed for trying to drown him as a baby.

Sherri Telnas, 45, also critically injured his seven-year-old brother before being arrested by police in her California home on Saturday.

Officials found the boys unresponsive in a ditch, with the 12-year-old later pronounced dead at a hospital.

His younger brother is fighting for his life at Valley Children’s Hospital, according to officials.

After her first attempted murder of her eldest son, Telnas no longer had custody of the child.

The boy was put in the custody of his father, Jacob Telnas, the Missoulian reported.

The 45-year old was arrested at the scene and held on charges including murder and attempted murder, deputies said.

In 2009, the mum was convicted of trying to drown the same boy when he was just 10 months old, according to a report in Missoulian.

Telnas, then 34, was sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the state Department of Public Health and Human Services, reported New York Post.

Prosecutors said she had been “in the throes of mental illness” when she plunged into a river with her baby, eventually taking him to a hospital where she admitted, “I tried to drown my baby,” according to the report.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal endangerment and was ordered to undergo mental health treatment, according to the report.

At the time, the prosecutor said her sentence “ensures that this won’t be repeated.”

Following the drowning attempt, the older child was put in the custody of his father, Jacob Telnas, the Missoulian reported. It’s unclear how or why both boys were in her custody in California.

Tulare County sheriff spokesperson, Ashley Ritchie, said: “We are aware of the Montana incident.

“We are working with multiple agencies to confirm the details.”

Telnas could be charged as early as Monday afternoon, according to the Visalia Times Delta.

Officials have not said how the boy died pending an autopsy.
