WARNING – DISTRESSING CONTENT: Brooke Evelyn Lucas has appeared at the Magistrates Court of Western Australia, in Perth, charged with unlawful intent to kill or endanger human life
A mum has been accused of trying to kill her one-year-old baby by pouring bleach down his feeding tubes.
Mother-of-two Brooke Evelyn Lucas, from Perth, Australia, was charged yesterday with unlawful intent to kill or endanger human life, 9news reports.
Little William was born 14 weeks premature and suffers from a rare disease called Pierre Robin sequence. He requires a tube to eat and breathe.
The chronically ill tot, now 13 months, needs constant care and has spent most of his life in and out of hospital.
Police allege his 26-year-old mum put the cleaning chemical down his tubes five days after Christmas, on December 29.
William had just been discharged from Perth Children’s Hospital and was rushed back in after the alleged bleach incident.
Doctors managed to treat William successfully and there is no serious damage done to his body, it is understood.
His mum had written on Facebook on Christmas Eve: “I am in tears after he was so sick Friday and Saturday that he needed to be admitted into hospital.
“Doctors think he had Broncilitis. But has bounced back better than ever.”
Then on New Year’s Eve, two nights after the alleged poisoning, Lucas posted photos of William on Facebook, telling friends her ‘poor little man’ was back in hospital, Perth Now reports.
Lucas appeared at court today after being arrested by Child Abuse Squad detectives.
She was said to be ‘inconsolable’ in court.
Lucas has been remanded in custody and is due back in court on Monday.
