The Dancing On Ice star – and her ego – have come a long way since her formative years as a wannabe actress in Romford
Gemma Collins has hogged headlines this month with her outrageous antics on Dancing On Ice, but how did she go from an adorable ballet-dancing school girl to a diva?
The reality star, 37, grew up in Romford and was a keen performer from a very young age.
She studied dance and even won a place at the fabled Sylvia Young Theatre School.
However, she got her big break thanks to an old school friend – Amy Childs.
Amy landed her her a place in reality show The Only Way Is Essex in 2011 and Gemma soon became a regular.
Fans first saw her as a mouthy secondhand car sales woman who tried to flog a motor to co-star Kirk Norcross.
She ended up attempting to woo his dad, but she ended up getting humiliated as Norcross, Snr ditched her for another girl.
However, Gemma turned the embarrassing incident to her advantage and she soon became central to many of the show’s storylines.
Fans of the show saw her ego growing bigger and bigger as the show went on.
Gemma became embroiled in some of the most confrontational Towie scenes – including chucking a drink over James Lock when he insulted her weight, and iconically claiming James ‘Arg’ Argent would never “get this candy” when he bragged about oral sex with her.
She took her fame to a whole new level in 2014 when she signed up to star in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.
However, Gemma’s diva dark side seemed to emerge as she quit the show after just 72 hours in the jungle.
She was seen refusing to parachute into camp and cyring hysterically on camera.
Gemma later blamed her very early exit on health issues.
In a bid to bounce back from her I’m A Celeb experience, she signed up to yet another reality show.
This time it was Celebrity Big Brother’s turn to get a taste of The GC – the new nickname she’d rebranded herself with.
She made it past three days and actually survived a total of 29 days in the house.
Gemma was the seventh star to be booted out after receiving the lowest total number of votes to be saved.
She has since made appearances on a vast number of shows, including This Morning, Celebs Go Dating, Celebrity MasterChef and even her own Towie spin-off show.
In Gemma Collins: Diva Espagne, it appeared the reality star had gone into full Mariah Carey mode as she was seen travelling with an entourage and having full-on meltdowns on camera.
She seemed to embrace her new image as a reality TV diva and made a point of getting her outrageous antics caught on camera.
However, her latest rebrand as telly’s biggest diva may have backfired as she’s been called out on her behaviour during her latest reality show turn on Dancing On Ice.
After getting slammed by Holly Willoughby on This Morning for delaying rehearsals by taking a nap, The GC has found herself in the firing line.
The latest famous face to weigh in on her diva exploits was judge Jason Gardiner, who accused her of turning the show into a pantomime.
Gemma turned it into a full-on feud on Sunday night as she shouted at him: “Don’t sell stories on me”.
She survived for another week despite getting an ego-crushingly low score so we will have to wait and see what Gemma gets up between now and next Sunday.
All we can say for sure that knowing The GC, whatever she does is unlikely to be boring.
