Heartbreaking thing mum was denied as baby lay dying in hospital after attack

Six-month-old Ruben Sweet-Harris suffered two aneurysms as a result of the ordeal and later died

The heartbroken mother of a baby boy shaken to death by his own father in a fit of rage has revealed she wasn’t allowed to cuddle her son as he lay dying in hospital following the attack.

Mum Aisha Harris was told by police that she could not touch six-month-old Ruben Sweet-Harris while a criminal investigation was ongoing.

She said: “Ru was considered evidence while he was in hospital for three days.

“I wasn’t allowed to cuddle him in case I put a mark on him.

“As a parent my role was to keep him safe and I feel like I’ve failed.”

Seven months after her former parter, Lee Harris, was jailed for manslaughter, Aisha is set to appear on a new Channel 4 Show tonight, which will highlight the human cost of violent crimes.

A total of 768 people died as a result of murder or manslaughter in Britain between 1 January and 31 December 2017.

A Year of British Murder – a Channel 4 documentary, looks at the cases of some of those victims.

Ruben was one of the 25 babies killed in Britain in 2017.

Mum, Aisha ‘AJ’ Harris, 21, from Plymouth, was just 19 when her son was killed.

A campaigner for tougher sentences with shaken baby deaths, she said: “I feel like I’m in a TV show that I don’t have a script for. It seems so unreal.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever recover from losing my Little Man. I feel like Jekyll and Hyde because I’m fine one minute then in bits the next.

“Little things can set me off. I’m currently studying an English GCSE and read a text celebrating a little boy’s first birthday.

“I broke down because I’ll never get to celebrate Little Man’s birthday.

“I find it really hard to accept what happened. I used to imagine that Ru’d been taken away by social services. It gave me a chance of getting him back.

Lee has never said sorry to me. He got five years but he’ll be out in two, just as Ruben should be starting nursery school. How is that punishment for taking a child’s life?

“You can get life for dealing drugs.

“I don’t want other parents going through what I have. I hope people sign our petition calling for a mandatory 15 year sentence for anyone who shakes a baby to death.

“It’s got over 1,300 signatures but we need 100,000. A petition to Tesco to end the sale of eggs laid by caged hens got nearly 300,000 signatures. That says it all.”
