Gran, 80, finally dyes her hair after being banned by parents and her husband

Eighty-year-old Alayde Menna Barreto squealed in delight as she saw her locks had turned bright turquoise for the first time

A grandmother screamed with delight when she finally got to fulfill a lifelong dream of dying her hair.

Eighty-year-old Alayde Menna Barreto saw her locks had turned bright turquoise after they were dyed by her daughter Julia, 50, last week.

Grandson Bruno filmed the footage and claimed that retired teacher Alayde had always wanted to dye her hair.

She never did it because of strict parents and her husband Antonio discouraging her from changing her natural colour.

But when Antonio sadly died from a heart attack aged 72, two years ago, Alayde realised that ‘time was passing by’.

She decided to copy the style she had seen displayed by young girls in the area.

The happy clip shows the grandmother-of-three shrieking in excitement as the finished look is revealed to her in the mirror – sending the family into meltdown.

The video has turned Alayde into an internet star overnight as she has racked up nearly 80,000 interactions on social media with hundreds of commenters praising her new do.

Alayde now hopes her video inspires others to “do whatever they have always wanted but been too afraid to do”.

Bruno, from Santa Catarina, Brazil, said: “We were all together talking about some plans, and she said that dying her hair was something she never had the chance to do.

“So my mother said that we could do this for her, and she was so happy about it. Green is her favourite colour.

“She had really strict parents, and later when she was married her husband never encouraged her.

Sadly he passed away two years ago but now she’s trying to enjoy the good things in her life.

“She said that the time is passing by, and she needs to do the things she was always wanted to.

“She said that lately she was seeing a lot of young girls with cool colored hairs and she wanted to do too.”

The video was filmed when 21-year-old Bruno visited his family in Porto Alegre, Brazil, last week.

Alayde loves having her hair dyed so much she now plans to have a new colour every month.

She said: “I love my new hair color. I don’t know why I waited so long to do it.

“This week two younger girls talked to me and said that they loved my hair, now I’m planning to every month switch to a new colour.”

Bruno, who works in cyber security, said: “She knows [she has gone viral]. She absolutely loved it.

“I showed to her some comments and she was really happy about it. She said that she hopes that with her going viral more people decide to take action and do whatever they want and are afraid of.

“She’s absolutely loving [her new hair colour]. I have never seen my grandma so happy about her hair.

“She said that next month will change her hair to blue because our soccer team have blue as their main colour.

“I think that she will try to change her hair to a new colour every month now.”
