THE M1 motorway has been closed after a serious crash reportedly involving five cars and a lorry.
The major motorway has been shut northbound at junction 34 near Sheffield as emergency services work at the scene.
South Yorkshire Police say the closure is due to a “serious road traffic collision” and that the M1 will be shut “for some time”.
Officers are urging motorists to “avoid this area if possible” which sits to the north of Sheffield.
The southbound carriageway was temporarily closed to allow an air ambulance to land at the scene. It has since reopened.
Highways England said: “Due to the serious nature of the incident it will take approximately two hours to clear all trapped traffic.
“Any trapped traffic will be dealt with as soon as possible.”
Early reports suggest the crash involves five cars and a lorry.
Motorists have also said they have seen nine police cars, four fire engines and two ambulances speed towards the scene.
