Barbara Windsor needs watching 24/7 as health takes rapid decline

Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott has opened up about the latest development in her Alzheimer’s diagnosis

EastEnders legend Dame Barbara Windsor’s Alzheimer’s has got so severe she “can’t be left by herself”.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the soap star’s husband Scott, 55, sadly announced that the 81-year-old’s health had deteriorated over the last two weeks, and she now needed 24 hour surveilence.

He said: “She needs me all the time. Life has changed drastically for her.

“I have to tell Barbara where she is when she’s in our front room. She asks if she’s been there before.

“She realises she doesn’t work any more and doesn’t do the things she used to.

“The disease is shutting out her life and her memories. It’s heartbreaking to watch.”

Barbara’s husband also tragically revealed that recently she even forgot who he was.

“I was helping her out of the bath and she suddenly looked at me, very scared, and said: ‘Sorry, who are you?’ There’s no words that can describe it,” he recalled.

Scott – who is running a marathon in Barbara’s honour – added that he knows it’s now “inevitable” she will forget who he is entirely, and plans to show her pictures of their life together so that she’ll remember.

The news that the soap star’s health is deteriorating comes just days after she was spotted at the theatre with Scott, and appeared to be in high spirits, chatting to the public and posing for pictures.

However, Scott added:”I’d been doing a mis-justice to people going through the same thing if I didn’t say, ‘that’s not the reality,’ because it’s not the reality.

“She gets herself together for moments like that [seeing friends]… when we go the the theatre something happens to Barbara.

“When she’s out and it’s like her old self comes in and she sees the public and speaks to everyone and you see that part of her comes alive because it’s what she knows.”
