Baby girl fighting for life after being shot in head

A baby girl is fighting for her life after a man shot her in the head when her mum rejected him at a party, police said.

Marcos Antonio Echartea, 23, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after 10-month-old Fayth Percy was hit by a bullet in Fresno, California, on Sunday.

He is also also charged with three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer said that the suspect ‘showed no remorse’ when officers arrested him.

He was later booked into the Fresno County Jail.

Speaking at a news conference, Chief Dyer said: “It should shock the conscience of every person in Fresno to know that we have a 10-month-old baby lying in the hospital fighting for her life.”

He added that Fayth had been at a family birthday party with her mum Deziree Menagh, 18, when Echartea allegedly approached them.

Deziree and Echartea had only met once prior to the party, police said.

Dyer added: “While (Echartea) was inside the residence with her, he attempted to grab her hand. She pulled away.”

He said that as the teenager told family and friends what had happened – Echartea followed her outside and tried to force her to sit on his lap.

Deziree then collected her daughter from inside the party to leave, and got inside the car with a male friend, police added.

As they reached an intersection a few houses down, they saw Echartea walking ‘quickly’ towards them, according to ABC30 .

Dyer added: ‘At some point when he got close, he pulled out a handgun and fired three rounds into the driver’s side window, which was up. One of those rounds struck baby Fayth on the side of the head as she was being held by her mother.’

Police said that the glass window potentially saved Fayth by slowing the bullet – allowing her to survive the impact.

She was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Officers found Echartea back at the family party after the shooting, and he was arrested.

He was found to be wanted in connection with another shooting that took place at an ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend’s house on May 27.

The bullet landed close to a one-year-old baby.

Dyer said: “It is very apparent that Marcos Echartea has no regard for human life, even a baby.

“I know the parents are broken. They’re hurting. We held hands at the hospital and prayed over the baby. We’re asking that everyone in this community come together and pray for baby Fayth for a complete recovery.”
