Abandoned baby left in woods rescued from plastic bag

Police in Georgia have released heart-stopping bodycam video showing the rescue of an abandoned newborn baby.

The infant – still with its umbilical cord – was alive inside a plastic bag found in woods on 6 June in the city of Cumming, 35 miles (56km) north of Atlanta.

Officers have named the child Baby India and shared the video online, hoping it will encourage anyone with information on the parents to come forward.

The clip begins with the baby’s desperate cries as officers arrive at the scene. Speaking to a man who can be seen in the footage, they ask: “How did you find it?”

“I heard it from my house,” the man replies.

“Oh look at you, sweetheart,” says one officer, as the bag is torn open to free the youngster, who lets out a few more cries as the officer cradles the child and awaits assistance from paramedics.

“Oh, look how precious you are,” the officer adds, before the newborn is wrapped up in blankets.

Posting on Facebook, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Baby India was now in the care of the state family and children services department and was “thriving”.

It added that it was “continuing to aggressively investigate and to follow leads” regarding the discovery, and that it had received tips from “across the country” about the baby’s possible identity.
