Staffordshire Police say the woman fell from a bridge above the A50 near Meir, Stoke-on-Trent
A woman has died after falling off a bridge onto traffic on a busy dual-carriageway tonight.
Emergency services dashed to the A50 near Meir, Stoke-on-Trent, tonight after reports the woman hit a car.
Part of the dual-carriageway remains closed.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “Officers are appealing for witnesses following the death of a woman in an incident on the A50 near to Meir, Stoke-on-Trent.
“Police were called to reports that a woman had fallen from a bridge over the A50 and had been hit by a car.
“Officers attended and sadly the woman was confirmed deceased at the scene.
“Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting incident 656 of March 11.”
Traffic is heavy between Stoke-on-Trent and Uttoxeter to the east.
A Highways England spokesman said: “The A50 is closed in both directions between the A520 and the A521 eastbound and the B5029 and the A520 westbound near Blythe Marsh due to a Police led incident.
“Road users in the area are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to consider alternative routes if possible.”
The A50 is a major trunk road which connects Stoke-on-Trent with the M1 at Kegworth, Leicestershire, near East Midlands Airport
